Galataport Cruise Terminal and Istanbul's Airports: Transfer Questions Answered

Starting or ending a cruise in Istanbul? Answers to the questions cruise passengers ask most about getting between Galataport in Karaköy and Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen.

Cruise passengers tend to ask the same handful of questions, usually the night before disembarkation. Here they are, with straight answers.

Where exactly is the cruise port?

Istanbul's cruise ships dock at Galataport, on the European shore of the Bosphorus between Karaköy and Tophane, in the Beyoğlu district. The waterfront was redeveloped into a promenade with shops, restaurants and museums, and the passenger terminal itself sits underground. When a ship is in port, part of the quayside becomes a controlled customs area; when it leaves, the space returns to the public.

In practical terms, you are right in the city. The Galata Tower is up the hill behind you, the Old City is across the Golden Horn, and the Bosphorus ferries leave from nearby piers.

How far is Galataport from the airports?

Istanbul Airport (IST) is roughly 40 to 45 km away by road. With normal traffic, the drive often takes around 45 minutes to an hour, longer at peak times. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side, around 45 to 50 km away, and the trip includes a Bosphorus crossing, so allow more time, often an hour or more and noticeably longer in the evening rush.

How do I time a transfer from the ship to my flight?

Disembarkation usually happens in the morning, in groups. The time you actually walk off the ship depends on the cruise line's schedule, your group number and how quickly luggage is offloaded. Our advice:

  1. Find out your expected disembarkation time from the ship before booking the pick-up.
  2. Do not book a flight that leaves too soon after disembarkation. Many travellers prefer an afternoon flight on disembarkation day, or an overnight stay in the city.
  3. For an international flight from IST, aim to be at the terminal about three hours before departure; work the pick-up time backwards from there.

Where will the driver meet me at Galataport?

Private vehicles cannot drive up to the ship. After you clear the terminal, you come out into the area around the port where vehicles can stop. The exact meeting point is confirmed with your booking, and it is worth keeping your phone on because the area can be busy when several ships are in at once. Give us the ship's name so the driver can follow its arrival.

And for embarkation day?

Coming from the airport to board a ship is the less stressful direction, provided your flight is not cutting it close. We generally recommend arriving in Istanbul the day before your cruise. Flights do get delayed, and the ship will not wait. If you do fly in on embarkation day, book a transfer with your flight number and check-in deadline in the notes.

What about traffic around the port?

The coastal road through Karaköy and Tophane is narrow for the amount of traffic it carries. On days with large ships in port, combined with weekday rush hours, the last kilometre can be slow. Drivers know the local approaches, but it is sensible to add a little extra time.

Can I see some of Istanbul between ship and plane?

If there are several hours between disembarkation and your flight, some passengers arrange a longer transfer with a stop, or leave luggage at a hotel and explore. If that interests you, tell us when you book and we can discuss what is realistic for the time you have.

Anything else?

Keep passports, medication and valuables in your hand luggage, not in the bags handed over the night before. And have a little Turkish lira for the first few hours ashore.

Book your Galataport transfer on this site, add your ship's name and flight details, and we will plan the pick-up around both.
